How to support the mental health of your staff

During these unprecedented times, stress is at an all-time high and the mental health of your staff is very important. With so many people working from home and being social distant from each other, this time can feel very lonely.  Here are a few tips on how to support the mental health of your staff.

A safe space

Firstly, ensure that your team feels like they work in a space where they can talk about their feelings and what is causing them stress and affecting their mental health. Encourage your team members to work efficiently, provide de-stressful solutions to prevent them from overworking themselves and constantly remind them that they can always ask for help.

Encourage healthy eating and exercise

Eating healthier meals and exercising is scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve mental health. Not only will it improve the mental health of your team, but it will also contribute to the overall health of your team.  Your team can swap recipes and exercises regimes, this positive engagement between each other is also a stress buster!

Post work activities

Plan and organise after-work events that are not work (or COVID-19) related. Games night, a cooking competition or a quiz are a few ideas that your team could participate in to lighten the mood. These activities can help relax your team by being a distraction from their everyday lives and can occur via video-calling services such as Google Meet or zoom.

Positive feedback and encouragement

The current climate of the world is very gloomy and negative, this contributes to our mood and how we view things.  Hearing words of encouragement and positive feedback will help your staff think positively about their work and themselves. Ultimately, remind everyone to be mindful of each other. No one truly knows what their other colleagues are dealing with. Using these tips and other mental health support techniques you can ensure the mental well-being of your staff.
